Panchgani, a famous tourist destination, has made outstanding efforts in making its city clean while making sure that all the waste is scientifically treated. Being an eco-sensitive region, the city has very few options for waste processing and disposal. Through constant effort of the municipal council, it has been successful in implementing per cent segregation in all its 2, households and commercial spaces.

The city generates some seven tonnes of waste every day and processes every bit of it. After collecting segregated waste, the dry waste is segregated further in as many as seven categories such as glass, metal, rubber, clothes, recyclable plastic or bottles, shredded plastic and footwear. The wet waste is composted and sold while the dry waste is sent for recycling to Pune. The previous garbage disposal site is now converted into a garden, which also serves a tourist point named Swachh Bharat Point.

A city with a population of more than 6 million is teaching citizens how to practise segregation. The city has brought together 3, swachhdoots who are not only now apprising the citizens but also monitoring segregation status in the city. Each person is expected to collect segregated waste from households and the money made from collection of user fee and sale of dry waste goes to the collector and helper directly.

This is one of the many other initiatives of GHMC. Money made from the sale of recyclable plastic goes towards livelihood development of the informal sector in the city. We are a voice to you; you have been a support to us.

Segregated waste is also often cheaper to dispose of because it does not require as much manual or mechanical sorting as mixed waste. For example, here at EMS we segregate our paper and cardboard into a separate skip to our other, general waste.

Over time that can add up and, if you have more diverse waste streams, you can see further cost savings. For some waste streams, you may even be able to sell it off and create a revenue stream. There are a number of important reasons that we encourage waste segregation; legal obligations, cost savings and protection of human health and the environment. As a business, you should make it as easy as possible for your staff to correctly segregate their waste.

This can include labelling, making sure you have enough accessible bins and making it clear why segregation is so important. Net Zero Carbon means that an activity emits no carbon into the atmosphere. However, to be considered carbon neutral, a business needs to offset the carbon emissions it produces even if the emissions are increasing.
